Observation and patient disposition after GHB poisoning

All patients with CNS depression due to gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) poisoning require close observation in a critical care area, but admission to an intensive care unit is usually not required as the duration of action of GHB is short (2 to 4 hours).

Discharge patients if they remain asymptomatic for at least 1 hour after ingestion.

Sedative drugs can continue to cause significant cognitive impairment for several days following exposure. Advise patients not to drive or operate machinery for at least 3 days after discharge.

Consider referral to, or consultation with, a drug and alcohol service for the management of hazardous, harmful or dependent use of GHB (see Overview of disorders of GHB use).
