Decontamination
After paraquat ingestion, early gastrointestinal decontamination is essential. Patients must be alert and cooperative, and able to protect their airway, or be intubated, to receive gastrointestinal decontamination. If the patient is intubated, administer gastrointestinal decontamination via a nasogastric or orogastric tube—confirm correct placement of the nasogastric or orogastric tube beforehand.
Immediately give:
1 activated charcoal 50 g (child: 1 g/kg up to 50 g) orally or via a nasogastric or orogastric tube paraquat poisoning
OR
2 soil 100 g mixed with water as a slurry, orally or via a nasogastric or orogastric tube
OR
2 Fuller’s earth (calcium montmorillonite) 150 g in water 1000 mL (child: 2 g/kg up to 150 g as a 15% suspension with water [13.3 mL/kg]) orally or via a nasogastric or orogastric tube. paraquat poisoning
