General information on altitude illness
Altitude illness refers to a set of syndromes caused by reduced oxygen and changes in air pressure present in high-altitude locations.
There are no locations in Australia high enough to cause altitude illness. However, many Australians travel to international destinations, including New Zealand, where altitude illness is a possibility. Anyone ascending above 2500 metres must take preventive measures and be highly alert to the subtle onset of symptoms of altitude illness; the Go slow and sleep low patient fact sheet can educate travellers about safe ascent. Altitude illness can occur below 2500 metres, but is less likely.
Note: Altitude illness usually occurs in unacclimatised travellers at altitudes above 2500 metres, but can occur at lower altitudes.
