Treatment of chlamydial conjunctivitis in adults
Refer adults with chlamydial conjunctivitis who have pain, photophobia or reduced vision to an ophthalmologist because corneal complications can occur.
For nonpregnant adults with chlamydial conjunctivitis, use:
doxycycline 100 mg orally, 12-hourly for 7 days. doxycycline doxycycline doxycycline
For pregnant adults or those unlikely to be adherent to doxycycline, use:
azithromycin 1 g orally, as a single dose. azithromycin azithromycin azithromycin
Chlamydial conjunctivitis usually occurs in adults with exposure to sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Evaluate the patient for other sites of infection, as well as other STIs.
