Hepatitis C

Patients with HIV and hepatitis C co-infection should be referred for specialist management.

Direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C virus are as efficacious in people with HIV as those without. Drug interactions can be challenging to manage; before prescribing direct-acting antivirals, check for drug interactions (see Antiretroviral drug interactions).

Note: Check for drug interactions before prescribing hepatitis C treatment for a person with HIV infection.

For detailed information about pre-treatment assessment of patients with hepatitis C, and other aspects of management of hepatitis C, see Hepatitis C in the Liver Disorders Guidelines.
