Considerations in managing oral and oropharyngeal candidiasis in adults with dentures
For adults with oral or oropharyngeal candidiasis, denture hygiene can minimise infection from contamination of the denture surface. This includes removing dentures from the mouth at night, then cleaning and storing them in a dry environment overnightStafford, 1986Manfredi, 2013. Suggest dental review to assess the fit of dentures.
If symptoms of oral or oropharyngeal candidiasis do not resolve after 1 month of optimal oral and denture hygiene, apply topical antifungal therapy inside the mouth and to the dentures. Application of miconazole gel to the fitting surface of the dentures is recommended at least twice a day. Miconazole is preferred over nystatin for this purpose because of better retention on the denture surface.
