Stopping daily HIV PrEP
People taking daily HIV PrEP should continue PrEP for at least 28 days after their last potential HIV exposure. However, there is evidence that cis-gendered men who have sex with men do not need to continue HIV PrEP for 28 days and can safely stop daily PrEP if they have taken a dose 24 and 48 hours after the last at-risk sexual exposure.
People with hepatitis B virus infection should be assessed by a clinician experienced in the management of hepatitis B before stopping daily PrEP because reactivation of hepatitis B can occur. If PrEP is stopped, some people may need to change to antiviral therapy for treatment of hepatitis B infection. All people with hepatitis B should be closely monitored after stopping PrEP. See also Hepatitis B and HIV co-infection.
If an individual chooses to stop PrEP, they should have a plan to restart if their HIV acquisition risk subsequently increases.
