Naevus of Ota

Naevus of Ota is slate-coloured pigmentation caused by dermal melanocytosis. It is usually unilateral, and occurs on the forehead and around the eye area. Pigmentation may also affect parts of the eye (oculodermal melanocytosis) and the oral mucosa. See here for a photo of naevus of Ota. A similar-looking dermal melanocytosis can occur on the upper trunk and arm area, and is referred to as naevus of Ito.

Naevus of Ota is more common in Asian people. The naevus is usually present at birth, but can sometimes appear later in life and be misdiagnosed as nonresolving bruising.

If treatment is desired, refer to a dermatologist for advice and laser therapy. Treatment is effective, although multiple sessions are usually needed.
