Doxepin at night (in adults only)
While waiting for specialist referral for consideration of omalizumab and other specialist treatments, or instead of specialist referral (if preferred), consider trialling doxepin (in adults only). Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant and a potent histamine receptor antagonist. Consider:
Consider potential drug interactions, and additive adverse effects in patients using concurrent antidepressant drugs. For common antidepressant adverse effects, see Overview of antidepressant adverse effects in the Psychotropic guidelines. Doxepin is not recommended in elderly patients. Warn patients (especially those who drive or operate heavy machinery) on the possibility of sedation, which can continue to the following day if doxepin is taken at night.
