Specialist treatments (including omalizumab)

Omalizumab is a recombinant humanised anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE) monoclonal antibody. It can be prescribed by an immunologist, allergist or dermatologist. Omalizumab is initially administered monthly as a subcutaneous injection, and can be self-administered by the patient or administered in the community (eg by a general practitioner).

Systemic immunosuppressants (eg ciclosporin, sulfasalazine, mycophenolate, methotrexate) may be considered if the patient does not respond or does not tolerate other therapies.
