Injectable hormonal contraception

Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is a long-acting reversible contraceptive that is given by intramuscular injection every 3 months. Some females with developmental disability tolerate this well, but may need assistance with scheduling and attending regular appointments.

For contraindications and precautions, including advantages, disadvantages and adverse effects of depot medroxyprogesterone, see Depot medroxyprogesterone contraception. Females with developmental disability may not tolerate spot bleeding that can commonly occur with depot medroxyprogesterone. Increased risk of osteoporosis is also a consideration in females with development disability.

If depot medroxyprogesterone is considered appropriate, it is essential to provide advice to the person, or their parents or carers, about how to start depot medroxyprogesterone and when it becomes effective; see here.
