Subdermal implant
An etonogestrel implant is a subdermal progestogen-only long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) that requires minimal user involvement. For contraindications and precautions, including advantages, disadvantages and adverse effects, see Etonogestrel contraceptive implant.
If an etonogestrel implant is considered appropriate, it is essential to provide advice to the person, or their parents or carers, about how to start the etonogestrel implant and when it becomes effective; see here.
Females may not tolerate spot bleeding that can commonly occur with an etonogestrel implant. Increased risk of osteoporosis is also a consideration in females with developmental disability. Additional considerations may include visibility of the implant under the skin (eg potential for bullying, abuse). The implant can be a focus for ‘skin picking’ in some people.
