Gender identity in people with developmental disability
Gender dysphoria can occur in people with developmental disability as in the general population. The presentation of gender dysphoria may be influenced by factors such as cognitive ability. Studies suggest there may be a higher prevalence of autism spectrum disorder in children and adolescents with symptoms of gender dysphoria; see Autism spectrum disorder.
Specialist assessment of a person with gender dysphoria by a psychiatrist or gender clinic is advised. Support people with gender dysphoria to reduce distress, and improve social communication and functioning. See also Support and education for healthy sexual expression in people with developmental disability.
