Alcohol intake

Alcohol consumption should be minimised in all patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Advise patients that not drinking is the safest option, but weigh up the pros and cons for each individual.

For patients without significant liver fibrosis, alcohol intake should be limited to two standard drinks per day (one standard drink is 10 g of ethanol) with regular alcohol-free days encouraged, consistent with national guidelines for the general population.

For patients with cirrhosis, complete abstinence from alcohol is recommended.
