Physical activity

Physical activity reduces the risk of developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, physical activity has a modest impact on liver steatosis, independent of weight loss, and can reduce cardiovascular risk. Participation in a regular exercise program may also boost patient confidence to engage with other lifestyle interventions.

Advise patients to follow the Australian physical activity guidelines and undertake both aerobic and resistance exercises. Brochures with tips for patients to increase their physical activity are available to download on the Australian Government Department of Health website:

  • Age 18 to 64 years: ‘Australia’s physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines for adults (18–64 years)’ [URL]
  • Age 65 years and over: ‘Choose Health: Be Active—A physical activity guide for older Australians’ [URL].

Further information on physical activity is available elsewhere in these guidelines—see Physical activity and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk and Physical activity and exercise for adults with type 2 diabetes.
