Clinical presentation
Effects of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include:
- central nervous system (CNS) effects—dose-related CNS depression; coma can occur with large ingestions
- gastrointestinal effects—vomiting is an early feature
- cardiovascular effects
- tachycardia
- myocardial depression, hypotension (in severe toxicity)
- metabolic effects
- ketosis (from acetone)—patients may have a sweet or ketotic odour on their breath
- mild metabolic acidosis
- hypoglycaemia
- other effects—hypothermia.
