Clinical presentation

Effects of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include:

  • central nervous system (CNS) effects—dose-related CNS depression; coma can occur with large ingestions
  • gastrointestinal effects—vomiting is an early feature
  • cardiovascular effects
    • tachycardia
    • myocardial depression, hypotension (in severe toxicity)
  • metabolic effects
    • ketosis (from acetone)—patients may have a sweet or ketotic odour on their breath
    • mild metabolic acidosis
    • hypoglycaemia
  • other effects—hypothermia.
