Toxic dose
Risk assessment for unintentional paracetamol poisoning (also referred to as repeated supratherapeutic ingestion [RSTI]) is based on:
- the dose of paracetamol ingested each day
- the patient’s symptoms and signs.
Investigate patients who have ingested the following doses of paracetamol:
- 10 g (or 200 mg/kg in patients under 50 kg) or more taken over a 24-hour period
- 12 g (or 300 mg/kg in patients under 40 kg) or more taken over a 48-hour period
- a therapeutic dose (60 mg/kg up to 4 g daily) taken over a 48-hour period if the patient has symptoms of acute liver injury (eg abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting).
