Thrombotic microangiopathy

Thrombotic microangiopathy is sometimes seen in association with VICC due to brown snake, tiger snake, Hoplocephalus snake species, rough-scaled snake and taipan envenomings.

Severe thrombotic microangiopathy is an uncommon complication of snake bite and experience in its treatment is limited. Seek advice from a clinical toxicologist and consider the need for admission to an intensive care unit.

Consult both a clinical haematologist and nephrologist if patients develop severe thrombocytopenia and acute kidney injury. Haemodialysis is the main treatment modality. For more information on haemodialysis, see here.
