Clinical presentation
Effects of pregabalin or gabapentin poisoning usually develop within 1 to 2 hours of ingestion and generally resolve within 12 hours. Both drugs are renally excreted, so kidney impairment can prolong toxicity.
Effects of pregabalin poisoning include:
- central nervous system (CNS) effects
- CNS depression (altered conscious state ranging from drowsiness to coma); coma has been reported in severe poisonings and co-ingestion with other sedative drugs
- dizziness, ataxia, tremor, myoclonus, seizures.
Effects of gabapentin poisoning include:
- CNS effects—drowsiness, lethargy, ataxia, dizziness
- gastrointestinal effects—nausea, vomiting.
