Clinical presentation
Effects of low-dose clozapine ingestions include drowsiness and anticholinergic effects, in particular delirium and urinary retention—see Anticholinergic toxidrome for management.
At larger doses, clozapine can cause central nervous system (CNS) depression (altered conscious state ranging from drowsiness to coma), miosis, tachycardia, hypotension and hypersalivation. QT-interval prolongation has been reported, but only at increased heart rates and without torsades de pointes. Seizures can occur at therapeutic doses and in poisoning.
Children are at greater risk of drowsiness and extrapyramidal effects than adults. Extrapyramidal effects due to clozapine are not seen in adults.
