Enhanced elimination

Isoniazid is removed effectively by haemodialysis if started early in the course of treatment, but should only be considered as a second-line treatment to the antidote pyridoxineMowry 2021. Potential indications for haemodialysis in patients with isoniazid poisoning include:

  • seizures or metabolic acidosis and inadequate supplies of pyridoxine
  • seizures or metabolic acidosis refractory to pyridoxine.

Seek advice from a clinical toxicologist to determine the need for haemodialysis.
