Treatment of refractory Clostridioides difficile infection

Refractory Clostridioides difficile infection is defined as a lack of clinical improvement following 5 days of recommended treatment for a new episode of diarrhoea (eg treatment for a first episode or recurrence).

Patients who have some degree of diarrhoea persisting after 5 days of recommended treatment but have clinically improved from baseline are not considered to have refractory disease – complete the course of treatment for these patients and see Follow-up for patients with Clostridioides difficile infection.
