Streptococcus suis meningitis

Streptococcus suis is a cause of acute bacterial meningitis, especially in Southeast Asia. It is associated with substantial morbidity (hearing loss). Give directed therapy for 10 to 14 days, as for Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcal) meningitis. Dexamethasone, preferably started before or with the first dose of antibiotic, is added to therapy because it reduces the risk of severe hearing loss.
