Differential diagnoses of oral and oropharyngeal infection caused by Candida and related species

Denture-associated erythematous stomatitis involves sensitive erythematous lesions, often associated with Candida, confined to denture-bearing areas, particularly the palate. It may appear punctate, or smooth and red, and nodular hyperplasia may be observed; see Denture-associated erythematous stomatitis for a photo. Median rhomboid glossitis presents as an area of depapillation and erythema in the midline of the dorsal tongueNg, 2013. It can be idiopathic or associated with candidal infection. It may be fissured or nodular and, if candidal infection is present, autoinoculation of the palate may occur. See Median rhomboid glossitis (tongue) and Median rhomboid glossitis (palate) for photos. Median rhomboid glossitis is benign and usually asymptomatic, although it may sting or burn. Address predisposing factors (eg smoking, ill-fitting dentures, diabetes) and use topical antifungal therapy.
