Osteoarthritis in people with developmental disability

In people with developmental disability, osteoarthritis management may be complicated by:

  • increased comorbidities (eg obesity)
  • less regular physical activity
  • more complex muscle and joint problems (particularly in people with cerebral palsy, in whom osteoarthritis may occur earlier than in the general population).

Effective treatments for osteoarthritis of the knee include lower leg strengthening and aerobic exercise. For more detail on osteoarthritis management, see Rheumatology guidelines.

A physiotherapist with experience in treating people with developmental disability can develop a physical activity plan that is suited to the person’s abilities and circumstances.
