Associated neurodevelopmental disorders
Common neurodevelopmental disorders in people with autism spectrum disorder include:
- speech and language disorders—these can be easily missed especially if a person seems able to communicate verbally; check if the person can actually convey meaning and demonstrate understanding in their communication (see Communicating with a person with developmental disability)
- attention deficit hyperactivity disorder—this is very common in autism spectrum disorder but can be missed, especially the inattentive subtype; for management advice, see Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
- intellectual disability—40% of people with autism spectrum disorder have intellectual disability, 35% have borderline IQ.
