Observation and patient disposition after stimulant drug poisoning
Specific observation and patient disposition advice is given for poisonings due to the following stimulant drugs:
- cocaine
- theophylline and caffeine
- novel stimulant drugs
- novel hallucinogenic drugs
- synthetic cannabinoid-receptor agonists.
For all other stimulant drug poisonings, follow the advice in this monograph.
Admit all patients with evidence of stimulant drug-associated sympathomimetic toxidrome until toxicity has resolved.
Admit patients with evidence of vascular complications or hyperthermia to a critical care unit.
Observe all other patients with stimulant drug poisoning in hospital for at least 4 hours after ingestion of an immediate-release preparation, or at least 12 hours after ingestion of a modified-release preparation.
